ETCC: Thompson and Poulsen to ETC Cup

Post by Eurostc on Sat Oct 17 2009, 02:57

James Thompson won most of the DTC finale heats this year but lost the championship to Michel Nykjær in the last round where the Brit was absent.
By Aslak Vind Friday, 16 October 2009 17:42 CET
"I don’t know how other people rate our chances in the race, but I would like to think that we are among the favourites. I certainly hope so. We have no fear for the competition, and we have the advantage that we are bringing two cars.

We need to exploit that in the qualification, where you need to use slipstreaming on the 900 meter long straight with the hammer down," said team boss Hans Hartmann.

Neither Thompson nor Poulsen has ever been on the track before, but Hartmann doesn’t regard that as a problem.

"We all saw what James could do last year, where he on his first day ever on Jyllandsringen managed to set the fastest time, so he should be able to cope with this track as well.

Per will get the challenge of his life, but I believe that he will grow with the task at hand. He will get thrown out at the deep end, and then we have to see what he can do. He might get a shock, but usually that only makes you stronger.”

The ETC title has been won two years in succession by the newly crowned DTC champion, Michel Nykjær. But that doesn’t seem to put the Danish Honda team off.

"The goal is to help James take the title," Poulsen explained. "That is my job, and after that I just have to do my best. I think that we have the team needed to do so, so the only thing which can fail is me.

We have got the right people, and an optimistic bet would that I would be content making it into top five. But I will do anything I can to hang onto James. He must be the biggest favourite, even though I know that Michel Nykjær has won it the last two years

We didn't get Race 1 in the UK - so I've had to acquire it by other means... in Hungarian.

Great drive by Thompson in Race 2, I also thought Engstler did great as well, he had that BMW sliding all over the place in the first race. Shame on the lack of entries, but in reality the racing was still fairly decent considering the number of cars, the first corner in race 2 was good entertainment - all the cars sideways.

ETCC: ETC Cup to become a mini-series in 2010
The FIA have published details on changes to the ETC Cup for 2010 - with it now being a four event series in Germany, Portugal, Italy & Austria.

The tracks to be used will be unveiled at the WTCC season finalé at Macau.
By Neil Hudson Friday, 30 October 2009 18:41 CET
Marcello Lotti explained the reason for the change:
“A series of four events will help to cover the whole European territory, making it easier for the teams to take part in all or selected events. The aim is also to strengthen the ties between the National Championships that adopt the FIA technical regulations".

Cars eligible to compete are those running to Super 2000, Super 1600 or FIA Super Production specification as have been permitted in the ETC Cup events recently.
    Very Happy

Not too sure about the new format, the German and Austrian rounds make sense, for any Russian, Baltic, Finnish and ADAC entries but bit surprised there isn't a round at somewhere like Zolder - as that would have probably been a bit more attractive to the BTCC, STCC and DTC guys than a trip all way down to Portugal or Italy will.

Also, if people like Engstrom struggled to put enough funding together for Braga - they are going to find it nearly impossible to fund doing all 4 rounds
