    No works BMWs next year:

Fingers crossed WSR show up or else BMW will be left with the other independents, who are unlikely to be troubling the front runners if this year is anything to go by.

Touring Car Times looking at the possible outcomes for the BMW Independents next year, in brief.

None of this is confirmed - just what TCT thinks may happen:

    Proteam:
    1. Hernandez (If nothing happens with a SEAT works team)
    2. TBA
    3. TBA (They have at leat 4 cars - so could run 3 or 4)

    Wiechers:
    1. D'Aste
    2. Bennani

    Liqui Moly Team Engstler:
    1. Engstler
    2. K. Poulsen (possibly moving back to Engstler, no mention of Romanov)

    West Surrey Racing
    1. Turkington
    2. TBA - are looking for a second driver, presume this will be one of the 2010 BTCC cars, rather than adding a 4th car?

    RBM
No announcement on if they will race in 2011

Pepe Oriola to drive for SUNRED in 2011

16 year old Pepe Oriola will drive for the SUNRED Engineering team next season, the first driver to be confirmed in a SEAT for 2011.
Oriola will also become the youngest driver to ever have competed in the WTCC, as the Spaniard will still be 16 at the season opener at Interlagos on March 20th.

“This is a dream that comes true. It will be tough to be the youngest in the field, but I’ll do my best to have an impact. Obviously it will be difficult to fight for the title, but I will have the opportunity to learn from the best,” said Oriola.

This year, Oriola competed in the SEAT León Eurocup finishing fourth in the standings behind Gabor Weber, Michaël Rossi and Eoin Murray. Oriola took a pair of victories at the final round in Valencia to jump up the order and finish just one point behind the former Alfa Romeo 147 Challenge champion.

"We are confident that Pepe is mature enough for delivering a great maiden season. He has the potential to provide more than a surprise,” said SUNRED Team Principal Joan Orús.

New weights and eligible cars set for 2011
The weights and eligible cars for the FIA World Touring Car Championship 2011 has been set. All S2000 specification cars will be allowed to take part in the championship next year, including the new 1.6 liter turbo engine, the old 2.0 liter normally aspirated engines, as well as the turbo charged 2.0 liter diesel engines.
The cars with the new 1.6 liter turbo will have a base weight of 1150 kilos with FWD and 1170 kilos with RWD.

The FWD cars with the normally aspirated 2.0 liter engines will have the same weight as the new turbo engines, 1150 kilos. The RWD cars with the old engines though will only be five kilos heavier at 1155 kilos.

The cars with turbo diesel engines will have 1170 kilos as base weight.

The season start will see all cars on maximum compensation weight, meaning 40 kilos added to the base weights mentioned above.

Engstler and Poulsen back together for 2011

Franz Engstler and Kristian Poulsen are going to be back as team mates in the FIA World Touring Car Championship this year.
"We are happy to re-establish the cooperation with Kristian and his team. We are confident that this will give us good chances to successfully fight for the independent title once again," said team manager Kurt Treml.
Liqui Moly Team Engstler and Poulsen Motorsport are going to run a pair of BMW 320TC with the new 1.6 liter turbo engine for the German and the Dane.

Engstler and Poulsen has already started the 2011 season together in the Dubai 24 hours which was run during the past weekend.

The duo was fourth overall, driving the new BMW Z4 GT3, when they struck mechanical problems and dropped to 18th in their class when the race was over.

Looks like another year of struggle for Colin Turkington... another rumour is that he was in contact with Flash Engineering in Sweden on the run up to Christmas.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Colin Turkington hopes for full season drive

Former BTCC Champion Colin Turkington faces another frustrating season on the sidelines, unless he can secure a full season drive. The 2009 Champion endured a bit part WTCC season in 2010, starting just five weekends in the World series, something he doesn’t want to repeat in 2011.
“I’m just keen to do a full season’s racing,” Turkington told TouringCarTimes. “Last year, although I had some good results in World Touring Cars, it’s always difficult when you’re only racing sporadically to be consistent all the time.

“So this year I’m not really bothered where I’m racing as long as I can do a full season and be competitive.”

In Turkington’s ten race appearances he took four podium finishes, including an inaugural WTCC win at Okayama after the disqualification of Andy Priaulx.

Despite that, and his BTCC title, Turkington finds himself in a familiar position to last winter.

“We’re still trying to put it all together for this year,” says the Northern Irishman, “But as yet it’s all a little bit far away. Basically it boils down to not having any money, and that’s how it is at the moment.”

Turkington also confirmed that while BMW’s withdrawal as a WTCC manufacturer hadn’t directly affected his plans for 2011, it hadn’t helped either.

“I’ve never had any promises from BMW. Obviously if they had still been there as a manufacturer it may have made things a little easier, but at the end of the day I was still an Independent with West Surrey Racing.

“At this stage we’re just talking with everyone and trying to make something happen. I’ve a good relationship with WSR, but I’m just keen to be racing and I’m not sure what they can offer at the moment.”

Turkington hasn’t ruled out a future away from the WTCC, BTCC or even touring cars altogether, saying, “I guess I am sort of a touring car specialist, but I’ll drive anything I can get my hands on, so I have spoken to other teams outside of BTCC and WTCC, so hopefully something will come off for me.”

The key thing however is being on the grid for the opening race, regardless of the series.

“Well it’s very important. To have a chance of winning the championship you have to be there from the start. Although it’s only mid-January now, the first race comes around soon and time runs out, so I’m trying my best to be on the grid somewhere, but you know there’s no guarantees.”

    Nykjær confirms continued WTCC program

Michel Nykjær is going to continue driving in the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
"We have managed to get our things together, I am continuing with SUNRED in the WTCC 2011," said Nykjær to Racemag.
2011 is going to be Nykjær's second season in the WTCC, driving a SEAT León TDi.

"Now I know all the tracks, there are some new for this season, but that is going to be the same for everyone. I finished 11th overall in the WTCC last year, my goal is to better that," said Nykjær.

The team is going to start the season with the diesel engine, at least for the first races, before switching over to the new 1.6 litre turbo engine.

"We are going to continue with the diesel engine on dispensation, as the petrol engine is not ready yet. It is most likely going to take a few races before we get it," said Nykjær.

Full ILMC season for Andy Priaulx
Former FIA World Touring Car Championship driver Andy Priaulx is going to drive a works BMW M3 GT2 in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup during 2011 for BMW Team Schnitzer.
"I am really looking forward to this year as we are competing in some great races on three continents. I had my first taste of Le Mans last year and can’t wait to get back there," said Priaulx.
Priaulx is also going to perform various test programs for BMW, including the new DTM car.

"The programme is very varied and, with testing duties for BMW with cars from other racing categories, I know I shall be just as busy if not busier than before," said Priaulx.

The first Intercontinental Le Mans Cup-race will be held at Sebring on the 19th of March.

Norbert Michelisz set for a change of car
Norbert Michelisz is set to compete in the 2011 World Touring Car Championship again, but this time not in a SEAT.
The 26-year old Hungarian driver is expected to drive again with the Zengo Motorsport team with Hungarian electronics company Dension as principal backer.

Michelisz picked up the inaugural WTCC rookie challenge trophy in 2010, and also took his first overall victory at the final race of the season in Macau, driving a SEAT León TDI which wasn't eligible for the independents category last year.

It is believed the team will switch from SEAT to BMW which will put them in the independents fight and will also see them run with the new 1.6 litre turbo-charged World engine from the outset.

The team will therefore run a BMW 320 TC, which is believed to be being prepared for them by RBM (Racing Bart Mampaey) which ran Andy Priaulx & Augusto Farfus in 2010 as a works entry.

    Felix Porteiro back at Proteam?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The boss of the Scuderia Proteam BMW outfit is dropping some hints on the make-up Could Felix Porteiro make a return to the WTCC?of his driver line-up for the 2011 World Touring Car Championship season, with several other rival squads having already confirmed their entry lists for the upcoming season.

Despite BMW’s withdrawal as a works entry in the championship, the Proteam squad will be staying put in the Independent Trophy category of the series for another season.

The team took the Independent Trophy championship honours yet again, with Sergio Hernández taking the title for the second time. But the outfit was hampered by a severe falling out between Hernández and team-mate Stefano D’Aste, who quit the team before the end of the 2010 season.

Team boss Valmiro Presenzini won’t specifically give away the identity of his team’s drivers for 2011, aside from saying that one seat will go to a driver who has contested “three seasons” in the WTCC.

The numbers would point towards Spanish driver Félix Porteiro, who has been on the WTCC sidelines during the 2010 season. The 27-year-old Spaniard ran the 2007-8 seasons with the frontline ROAL BMW squad before spending the 2009 season with Proteam, narrowly losing out on the Independents’ title to Tom Coronel.

But Porteiro was spotted in the paddock at the season-ending Macau race, sparking rumours that he is trying to secure a comeback to the series.

Presenzini hinted that the second seat may go to a “young Spaniard, who is friends with Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso – you may well be surprised,” he hinted.

Updated again to take account of the Proteam Announcement below.

Also, according to Neil Hudson on Twitter, who is from Touring Car Times - there are 8 BMWs certain to race this year, so that means as we have 5 named drivers already, and the 2 extra Proteam cars, that there is at least one more BMW to be announced

Proteam confirms three BMWs for 2011

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

There are many rumours surrounding Proteam's line-up for the 2011 FIA World Touring Car Championship. TouringCarTimes met up with team owner Valmiro Presenzini who could reveal that the team is going to feature three cars on the grid for 2011.
The Italian dismissed the rumours about Félix Porteiro going back to his team.

"Félix is a great driver and a good person, but for this year we will not work together," said Presenzini to TouringCarTimes.

On the other hand, Presenzini revealed that former European Touring Car Cup class champion Fabio Fabiani will be at the wheel of a BMW 320si, equipped with the old N/A 2.0 engine.

"Fabiani will be with us for at least the first few races. He will drive a 320si E90, while we will have two more cars equipped with the latest 2011 specifications," said Presenzini.

As for the names of the remaining two drivers, Presenzini said he couldn't reveal their names yet.

"I can't announce the name of the two other drivers who will work with us. I can only say that we will almost certainly have a driver who has already had experience in the WTCC and a very good rookie who comes from single seater racing," said Presenzini.

The official announcement is excpected in the next few days.

Dudukalo and Tarquini at SUNRED with Lukoil

Russian company Lukoil is going to partner SUNRED Engineering in the FIA World Touring Car Championship 2011. Russian driver Alexey Dudukalo and experienced touring car racer Gabriele Tarquini is going to drive a pair of SEAT Leon for the team.
"We are going to be a strong team in the WTCC with the support of Lukoil. It is nice to have Tarquini and Dudukalo in the team," said SUNRED team boss Joan Orus.
Tarquini claimed the WTCC title in 2009 for SEAT and finished second last season with SUNRED.

"I am very pleased to continue to race in the WTCC. I am pleased that a company like Lukoil has signed a contract with me and I am glad to have Dudukalo as team mate. Last year I helped Alex in the SEAT Eurocup and I am pleased to help him in the WTCC this year," said Tarquini.

The 35-year-old Dudukalo raced in the Russian Touring Car Championship in 2006 but has spent the last two years racing in the SEAT Leon Eurocup. The Russian finished sixth last year with one victory.

"I am pleased to be in the WTCC, it has been a dream for me over the last few years. I know Gabriele from last year, he helped me a lot in the Eurocup. I think that we together can become a strong force against our competitors in the WTCC this year," said Dudukalo.

Lukoil is the largest oil producer in Russia.

    Tiago Monteiro returns with SUNRED

Tiago Monteiro has signed to race for SUNRED Engineering again to start his fifth season in the World Touring Car Championship this year.
Monteiro, who joined the championship with the works SEAT squad in 2007 will race for the second year with SUNRED, and becomes the fifth driver committed to race a SEAT León full time this year.

"I am happy that SEAT and our partners have put their trust on me and I am delighted to race one more year in a championship which is, by all means, one of the very best in the world," said Monteiro.

“2011 will be an extension of 2010, with the same technical structure and the same conditions. I want to profit from the experience I have acquired over the past few years and translate that into my best raw results.”

Monteiro won two races in 2010 in the SUNRED run SEAT, finishing fifth in the championship in the non-manufacturer run team. The team will again start with the 2.0 diesel engine before switching to a 1.6 turbo unit along with rivals BMW and Chevrolet as soon as the engine is ready.

Monteiro was also confirmed earlier this week to be taking part in the Le Mans 24 Hour race with Signatech in a Nissan powered Oreca on June 11th-12th.

THREE DRIVERS FOR LIQUI MOLY TEAM ENGSTLER

The Liqui Moly Team Engstler ran two BMW 320 TC cars in Vallelunga, from Monday to Wednesday for three drivers: team principal Franz Engstler, Kristian Poulsen and Hong Kong racer Marchy Lee.
“We had a few technical problems on the first day with the power steering. But after we sorted them out everything was working fine. The car is a lot of fun to drive; with the turbo engine you also have a lot of power. I think is going to be good,” Poulsen commented.
Engstler echoed: “I like the car. It is nice to drive. However it will take some times to get used to it, because it is important to change the driving style compared to the BMW 320si we were racing until last year. That one required a very smooth driving while the 320 TC needs a more aggressive style.”

    Thats awesome news cheers
